Use this water softener sizing calculator to find the right grain capacity for your home. It works from three inputs — how many people live in the house, your water’s hardness in grains per gallon (GPG), and whether your water has noticeable iron — and returns a recommended softener size along with an estimated salt use, so you can shop with real numbers instead of guessing.

Sizing matters more than most people expect: an undersized softener regenerates constantly and burns through salt, while an oversized one lets water sit in the tank for over a week between cycles, which wastes money and can leave water stale. The goal is a system sized for your household’s actual daily hardness load.

How this calculator works

The calculator builds a recommendation in four steps:

  1. Estimate daily water use: household size × daily gallons per person (60 gal light, 75 gal average, 90 gal heavy use).
  2. Multiply daily gallons by your water’s hardness in grains per gallon (GPG) to get daily grains of hardness to remove.
  3. Add a buffer for iron: +15% for some iron staining, +30% for heavy iron staining.
  4. Multiply by 3 to target a regeneration every 2–4 days, then round up to the nearest standard grain capacity: 24,000, 32,000, 40,000, 48,000, 64,000, 80,000, or 96,000 grains.

Estimated salt use per regeneration is based on resin volume (grain capacity ÷ 30,000 grains per cubic foot), at 6–15 lbs of salt per cubic foot depending on whether the unit runs a high-efficiency or standard regeneration setting.
