Step 7: Build Your Ladder

Construct the ladder using two 2×6 side rails and 2×4 steps bolted between them. Space steps roughly 12 inches apart for comfortable climbing. We drilled pilot holes through the 2×6 rails and bolted the 2×4 steps in place with washers and nuts—much stronger than simply screwing them. Sand the steps smooth so they’re comfortable to climb barefoot. I’d check the bolts on this assembly every few months, since the ladder gets used constantly and vibration can loosen fasteners over time.
