Question: The buttons on my key fob wore away and don’t work due to 3 years of using it daily. I went to the local car dealership and they want to charge me $140 for a new one. The exterior plastic is worn and buttons are not working. I know there has to be a way to get a new key fob without spending hundreds. Can you supply suggestions on how to fix this or where I can get a cheaper one that works?

Answer: You can purchase just the plastic casing and put the electronic board back in and see if that works. You can also buy the exact key fob for your car depending on car. Why is it called a key fob?
The word FOB originated from watch fobs. The fob refers to an object attached to a pocket watch chain. Car starters, Garage door openers, and Keyless entry devices on motel room doors are also called fobs.
How much does it cost to get a new key fob?
If you lose or break the key and fob a dealer replacement and the programming will cost $200 or more. If you have a car that is fairly common (Hyundai, Honda, Ford, Nissan, Chevy, Toyota, Kia) and you did not pay over $35,000 for it, a new key fob will cost less if you buy one online and that includes the programming. A Mercedes dealer quoted $470 for a new key fob and programming, and a Jaguar dealer replacement keyless fob could be as much as $600.
