What Does the UE Code Indicate on an LG Washing Machine? Experiencing a UE error code on your LG top load washing machine? This error typically signals an issue with load balancing, tub positioning, or the machine not being level. Here’s what the UE error message means on your LG washer.
LG Top Load Washing Machine UE Error Code
Oversized clothing loads, overstuffing with blankets or towels, uneven distribution of wash loads, a misaligned tub, and an unlevel washer can lead to the UE error in washing machines. This error, indicated by the codes “uE” or “UE”, signals an unbalanced load.
To fix the UE error, simply redistribute the clothes within the washer or ensure the machine is level. When an LG washing machine detects an imbalance, it displays “uE” and attempts to auto-correct up to three times. If unsuccessful, it will continue to show the UE error, signaling the need for manual adjustment to resolve the load imbalance.
UE Error Code in LG Top Load Washers
The UE error code on LG top load washers typically arises due to three main issues: incorrect tub position, an unlevel washer, and uneven distribution of clothing weight.
Correct Tub Position and Washer Leveling
- Ensure the wash tub is properly aligned. Open the lid of your washer and inspect the interior.
- Examine the plastic guard. It should not appear more prominent on one side compared to the other. Adjust as needed to maintain balance.
LG washer UE error code – TUB POSITION FIX
If one side of the washing machine tub appears lower than the other, adjust it by raising the lower side. This adjustment involves manipulating the leveling feet located at the bottom of the machine. To elevate the washer, turn the leveling foot clockwise; to lower it, turn counterclockwise.
LG washer UE error code fix – level the washers feet on the bottom of the washer
Unevenly Distributed Clothing in Washer
Ensure that the clothes are evenly distributed within the washer drum. An imbalance where clothes are concentrated on one side can trigger a uE or UE error code.
LG Washer – Top Load Balancing & UE Error
Prevent the UE Error Code
For Small Wash Loads
- Include additional small items to balance the load better.
- Opt for a lower spin speed setting, or select the ‘no spin’ option for small loads.
For Mixed Fabric Loads
- Group similar fabric types together in the wash.
- Combine like items, such as washing all shirts together or all towels together.
For Various Types of Wash Loads
- Use the ‘bulky’ or ‘large’ cycle settings for washing items like rugs, towels, sheets, blankets, or pillows.
- Lower the spin speed, choosing either a low setting or no spin.
- For large items, manually rearrange the items in the drum to help prevent the UE error code.
Experiencing a UE error code on your LG top load washing machine? This error, commonly associated with the machine’s Smart Balance feature, can occur even when the washer is empty. LG has addressed this issue in newer models with a crucial software update.

We have a top load LG inverter direct drive washer that continues to show the UE code. We have done everything from level to readjusting clothes and resetting the machine but it will still show UE and stops at the rinse cycle. I believe we need to upgrade the software for the washer. How is that done?
Thanks for your post! It’s still helping people with this problem 2 years later. Here’s my story.
I have a LG WT1101CW top load washer. 2 months after the 5 year extended warranty ended my washer started going into an endless spin. It would wash, rinse, drain just fine but then it would spin forever. It never gave an uE code. The machine was level and I always balance the clothes. Sometimes I would stop it in order to finish the cycle. A few times when it finished it would show a UE code. I searched the internet and I called LG. I didn’t think it was the shocks so I ordered a main control panel. The part arrived broken so I returned that (another story) and started searching the internet again. I found this post. I read it to my handy husband and he said “that makes sense lets try it!”. We tipped the washer up, the main rotor nut was tight so then we tried the nut in the tub – it was loose, not a lot but it was loose. We also cleaned out all the nasty gunk under the cap. It’s hard to believe that was the problem but I’ve done about 8 different loads of laundry now and everything is working fine. I can’t thank you enough for your post!!!! Where would we be without people posting things on the internet? Thanks again.
All,
Sharing the same issue. Same results from LG. Tried the repair by popping off the cap at the base of the drum and it was tight. Lifted the washer to check the nut underneath and it was also tight. We bought this unit in late 2013 and have fought the problem ever since getting feedback from LG that it is the way we load the machine or I don’t have it leveled. Both responses are complete BS. Perfectly leveled with no clothes in the drum and I still get the UE code when running the Rinse/Spin cycle as instructed by LG. 2 years after warranty and they finally agree that it is not working properly.
$125 for a technician to come out and will then get an estimate for parts and labor. If that estimate is over $100 I am going to buy my wife a new machine.
As for the comment provided in this thread:
If you need a new RELIABLE WASHER:
CONSUMER REPORTS rates the MAYTAG MAXIMA MHW6000XW one of the best.

Consumers Reports is the main reason I have this washer in the first place. Back in 2013 this machine was a highly rated piece of equipment on their sight. So no thanks, I will use another resource for feedback!
After loading my clothes and beginning the cycle, the self balancing feature actually moves the clothes out of balance. Soon after the wash cycle begins, I get the off balance alert. Can I disable the self balancing feature since it is causing more harm than good?
Have an lg top loader. Dealing with the UE code..i have changed the shocks and still getting the code. What do i need to do.
My LG washer shows the ue code when the washer is empty. I have tried everything to remedy this issue. How do I get the updated software?
Started having the dreaded UE message after a repair by a “certified” LG repairman. Found your post 5 minutes before going out the door to by a new washer. You’re a genius. BTW Lowes wants to talk to you about a lost sale.
how do you get the software update to fix the EU code? how do you get the update into the washer?
is there anywhere to get a manual for it? I bought it from Lowe’s in their refurbished section, not the new and we never got a manual with it.
I am. Getting a UE code halfway through spin. Rinse Cycle. With no. Water in tub and then add time. And start to. Fill up. Again ba k. To. 17 minutes from 12.00. Could it be a loose wire or. Mother board it also. Doesn’t have a recalland. I. Believe the update has been. Applied already. It’s a wt5075cw
Did you replace the sensor and did it work? Mine is also starting to act up
Hi, We’re having problems with the UE code on our LG Top Loading Washing Machine.
How can we get the software update that addresses this issues?
R,
Robert
My LG Smart Drum continually shows a UE error nothing remedies the error. Additionally the drum does not seem to spin fast enough to extract water from the clothes. Please assist. Thank you
Dan Clark,
Yes sir we have heard many cases of frustration with LG washers.
If you need parts, check Amazon for LG Washing Machine Parts as it is cheaper then getting the parts from an appliance repair company.

Washing Machine Model: WT4970CW
Purchased in 2014.
Since about 6 months in owning this machine same problems that everyone else mentioned.
UE errors uE errors, fills with water and stop or drains and leaves contents dripping wet.
I’ve talked to support and was lead to believe that it’s a leveling issue or load is imbalanced.
I’ve put up with it for another 2 years believing it was my fault and continued to stop and start the loads countless number of times per load shifting items around inside the wash tub until the cycle finishes.
Sometimes I have placed dripping wet items in the dryer because the wash would never properly finish.
I’ve had ENOUGH of this frustration from LG washing machines.
Where were these reviews and complaints when I researched and bought what I thought was the finest product on the market?
Clearly there is a “PROBLEM” with this LG product and needs to be a recall or class action lawsuit if anyone has the know how to get that started.
I’m going to check for loose parts underneath the washer this evening and pray that I find something to tighten and resolve this issue.
Otherwise it’s to the curb with this frustrating piece of appliance.
I’m so frustrated and dissatisfied with this LG product that if I cannot get it resolved at no cost by warranty or some other courtesy of LG I would rather spend another hundreds of dollars on anything other than LG to replace it and will discourage anyone from buying LG products. If anyone has suggestions on a fix please advise.
Yes, this is the solution. Called a repairman out and he wasn’t any help.
First I just pried up the cap inside the washtub and tightened the small nut underneath. That seemed to help a bit but not much. Then I saw this post. I pulled the washer out from the wall, leaned it back against the wall, looked underneath and tightened the large nut in the center as much as I could. Just used large pliers. No more UE code. Hooray for not having to spend another $800!
how do I go about accessing the areas where the nuts are too tight them myself
My LG washer regularly (5-8 times per week) gets the UE error code and when I go to fix it, the wash tub is completely full of water and the wash cycle has only run for maybe 5-10 mins. It’s rarely on the spin cycle when the error occurs. Is there a way to fix this?
My front load LG washer is showing ue code. It won’t finish the final spin cycle. Please help asap.
LG does not care but Im going to convince Lowe’s that they should not be selling these washers. I’m keeping a warranty on mine and calling Lowes every time it shows a UE so they can document what a sorry washing machine this is. Going to buy a Maytag and never buy another LG product as long as I live.
Same problem with LG top load washer.
Get uE code on half or more of the loads.
Had a long chat with LG customer service and got no help whatsoever.
This was the solution to my UE error on my LG top load washer (WT 5101HW):
I had the same UE error come up on my 7-year-old LG topload washer two weeks ago. To make a long story short, the main rotor mounting nut securing the rotor assembly underneath the washing machine was very loose. The rotor assembly that is held in place by that nut was about an inch lower than it is suppose to be. After this nut was tightened up with a ratchet, the UE error was gone and now the washer performs without any problems.
Also, the main nut that secures the washer washplate in the tub was loose, and I tightened this up with a ratchet also (If you remove the washplate, there will be a lot of slimy mildew looking material under it. I cleaned this off and now the chronic mildew smell in my washer is gone).
Now the washer goes through the entire wash cycle normally.
Hope this is helpful to someone out there!
The sound signal on my LG top loading washer is not activated when the power button is pushed or when the wash is finished. How can I fix it?
My model is WT5170HV
Making it worse, the serviceman who took care of an issue early on wrote the wrong model number on my paperwork.
Imagine how hard it was for me to get the right model number.
I am SO SICK of the UE error.
I have disabilities and having to get up and down to the washer is a HUGE issue for me.
So we are just ignored.
There should be a way to update our firmware.
If it were available I would use my own smart phone to fix it myself.
I don’t have many hundreds of dollars to fix this.
It was supposed to super clean my clothing without wrecking it, and there should have been very few issues as it is all sensors and control board to manage it all, even load size etc.
Less loads because mine is a huge drum size.
I am begging someone at LG to address this.
I had no idea, I thought it was my fault.
I bought the super extended warranty but it expired in January.
Had I known it was a common issue I would have called in repair well before the warranty was up!
I would have asked them to look at it before now.
It won’t run a load through AT ALL now.
I can’t even hire someone to help me because nobody is allowed to sell parts to me because I am not an authorized dealer?
I live in Southern Ontario in Canada.
LG please restore my faith in your brand.
How do I get the update for my lg washer top load?
I am so tired of almost every load displaying a UE. Error code even though floor and machine is balanced. This company should take care of this issue. The next machine I purchase will not be from this company of the issue does not get resolved. I shouldn’t have to pay a repair man for issues that are common for this type washer. I paid enough for the set as it is
Francis Kolenda,
Is the LG washer on a level surface?

Service man just replaced all 4 struts on LG Washing Machine and it is still showing unbalanced load error. Ready to toss this machine. Any help is appreciated.
Same problem here. I called them and they want $285.00 for a service code. Biggest POS I ever bought.
My top load washer has the UE error code every wash. It even does this empty and the washer is level. What else could it be.
My machine displays the error code UE without clothes it, what can I do to stop the error for continuous cycling?
You popped the cap off in bottom of tub and checked the screw in bottom??
I get this error when running tub clean. I’m not able to complete a tub clean. And there’s nothing in the tub except water! I checked the center piece as suggested and it looks fine. Not sure what else there is to do.
We have the same issue with our top loading LG washer!! Takes forever to finish a load of wash! Come on LG fix these machines for us!
I was shocked to find that the small bolt under the agitator was loose and this fixed my issue with the UE errors. It really wasn’t even super loose. I was ready to hall it to the LG home office and drop it in the parking lot.
Our LG Washer and Dryer is between 3 and 4 years old. Since we have owned this washer it has constantly given us “UE” code errors. When you read the manual or their advertising it looks like just a simple issue that you have overloaded the machine. This is not true. This is a constant problem with our washer dealing with a small or large load. It just took me 3 hours to complete a normal wash before I could put clothes in dryer. I have also spent many hours on the internet looking for a solution. No real answers other than keep it on a low spin cycle. 90% of the reviews I see state that they have received little to no support from LG and that they are just trying to get a few more cycles out of it before they can move to another washer from another company. I am just saying this so other consumers looking at this product will be better informed.
We have the same problem as thousands and thousands of other consumers have complained about. Our LG wt1101cw washer is on a flat concrete floor and perfectly leveled. It doesn’t matter if we have a full load or nothing in the machine at all it keeps refilling and trying to balance a load that is centered perfectly or not even there. This happens every time and it takes two hours and constant resetting to get a load done.
My question to LG is if we replace the ‘out of balance / evaporation sensor’ is it going to finally wash our clothes without incident?
We are having the same issue with our top load LG washer. We have adjusted and leveled it, tried smaller loads, low or no spin but still having same issue. Is there a known fix for this?
Our washer shows the UE code many many times during each load I try to wash. We have done everything you have suggested but nothing absolutely nothing has worked. Do we need a new sensor?
My top loading LG washing machine… every time I wash something I have to make sure it doesn’t keep filling up with water from the UE code.
I actually sit and watch every load when it gets ready to spin.
I can’t wait until the day when I can get another brand of machine.
LG should replace every one of these machines.
I have a top load washer which is only a little over three years old.
UE error code comes up on every load and when there is no load!
Can you please help?
Hello my lg washer continues to have UE message and with every load no matter what I washing, towels, sheets, baby clothes or adult clothes it cycles 3 times and then sits until I find it, my water bill has significantly increased. I have leveled the washer I have made sure things are distributed, nothing seems to solve the problem. Very frustrating!
I agree. It should never have been sold in stores. I think we all are going to lose the cost of the washers because they are all going to have to be replaced by another brand by each of us. LG does not want to take the responsibility of replacing these machines.
Ue error code the most annoying washing machine I’ve ever used.
I have a customer with model WT4870CW washer that keeps showing the UE error. The serial # is 308PNXL2A818. Does the software need to be reprogrammed?
My LG top load washing machine almost always gets the UE error.
Sometimes I remove and reload the wet heavy wash and it is fine but other times it takes several attempts.
Most recently it took 4 hours to complete a load of 6 bath towels.
We have made sure the tub and unit are level.
Is there a recall?
Certain models need reprogramming?
Just curious before I call in a service call and spend mega money on something that may or may not be fixable.
