What are the main reasons a GE dishwasher will not turn on? I have a GE dishwasher that is 4 years old and it will not start or turn ON. What components do I need to check to get the dishwasher to start up? Answer: You will need to check some of the components on the dishwasher and ensure all are functioning normally.
GE Dishwasher Will Not Turn On
The main causes of a dishwasher that won’t start are power supply problems, a faulty door switch, inadequate water supply issues, and main control board fault. These items will cause a dishwasher to not start or turn on.
1. Check The Power Source
Examine the power source if your GE dishwasher won’t turn on. Make sure the dishwasher is turned on and that the GFCI outlet has power. If there is no electricity, you may need to reset the circuit breaker.
2. Inspect The Door Switch
The switch is on the front of the dishwasher and controls whether or not the dishwasher turns on when the door is shut. If the switch is not working, it may stop the dishwasher from beginning its cycle and turning on.
Open and close the dishwasher door several times to test the door switch. If the dishwasher doesn’t start, test the door switch with a meter. If your door switch is not working properly you will need to replace it.
3. Check Water Supply
Make sure to turn on the water supply valve and check that there is enough water pressure. If there is no water or insufficient water pressure, it’s possible that your dishwasher won’t start because of this.
4. Inspect The Main Control Board
If the dishwasher won’t start and you’ve already checked the power, door switch, and water supply, inspect the control panel. The dishwasher’s control panel is located in the center of the machine. If the control panel is faulty, it will prevent the dishwasher from operating.
To test the dishwasher control panel, press and hold down the start button for five seconds. If the dishwasher won’t start, inspect the control panel for any burns or damage. Test the control panel if you know what to look for and have a meter for testing control boards. If the main panel is damaged, replace it with a new panel.

If your GE dishwasher is failing to start even after you’ve checked the power, water supply, and blockages, check the door latch. Make sure it’s closed properly and that the latch isn’t broken. If the latch is broken, then you’ll need to replace it.
Check the control panel. Make sure all the buttons are working properly and that the display is lit up. If the display is lit up with an error code or a certain number of flashing lights, then you’ll need to consult your user manual to determine which fault code is being displayed. This error code will tell you what the problem is.
If the control panel is not lit up, then you’ll need to check the circuit board. Make sure all the connections are secure and that the circuit board isn’t damaged. If it is damaged, then you’ll need to replace it.

Check the circuit breaker. Make sure the breaker is in the “ON” position and that it hasn’t tripped. If the breaker has tripped then you’ll need to reset it.
Check the power outlet. Make sure the outlet is functioning properly and that it’s not tripped like on a GFCI outlet. Reset the outlet if it is tripped.
GE Dishwasher Won’t Start But Has Power
If the dishwasher has power but won’t start, check the door latch. Make sure the latch is closed properly and that it isn’t faulty. If the latch is busted you’ll need to replace it.
Check the control panel. Make sure all the buttons are working properly and that the display is illuminated. If the display is working but an error code is showing, the dishwasher still will not start. Check your user manual to find out the error code meaning.
If the control panel is not lit up, then you’ll need to check the circuit board. Make sure all the connections are secure and that the circuit board isn’t damaged. If it is damaged, replace it.
GE Dishwasher Won’t Start But Makes Beeping Sounds
If your dishwasher won’t start but makes beeping sounds, then the problem could be the thermistor. The thermistor or other times called a thermostat, is a sensor that monitors the temperature inside the dishwasher. If it’s not functioning properly the dishwasher won’t start. To check the thermistor, you’ll need to disconnect the power to the dishwasher, locate the thermistor, and test it with a multimeter. If the thermistor is faulty replace it.
