How To Stop A Ceiling Fan From Wobbling

Is your ceiling fan off balance or shaky? A ceiling fan that is unbalanced and wobbling left and right (back and forth) can be dangerous. This could mean loose screws holding the blades to the fan housing. If a blade comes off while the fan is in operation it could cause severe injury.

The reason for a wobbly ceiling fan is either the fan blades are bent downward, the screws holding the fan blades are coming loose, the mounting brackets are loose, the ball mount post holding the motor to the fan housing is stuck and not able to hang down normally, or the blades are warped and may need replaced or a fan blade balance kit.

How to fix a wobbly unbalanced ceiling fan

Turn off the fan and check all of the screws that hold the blades in place.

If any of the screws are loose then tighten the blades and also the screws on the mounting brackets.

Use a long pole and measure the bottom of the fan blades to the floor or from the top of the fan blades to the ceiling. This will let you know if you have bent or warped blades. If this is the case, you can try and bent the fan blades so they are in a perfect horizontal position.

You can also check to see if the screws that hold the complete fan assembly to the ceiling mounting bracket is tight. If those screws are not tight then the ceiling fan will have a swaying motion and this will have nothing to do with bent or warped fan blades.

Checked everything and the fan is still wobbling? If the fan still is wobbly it would be a good idea to purchase a fan blade balancing kit. If any of the fan blades are permanently damaged you can search the company who built it online and see if they sell replacement fan blades for your specific model.

  1. I’d like to thank you for posting the video on using the fan blade balancing kit. I have these kits, that came with the fans, but, had no clue how to use them. NOW that I see how simple…want to slap my forehead!
Again, thanks for taking the time to share the video.
