How To Fix Dishwasher That Is Not Filling With Water

Fix a dishwasher with no water. If you have a dishwasher and notice that there is no water coming in, there are a few components to check. The easiest troubleshooting method is to check the dishwasher filter and be sure it is clean and there are no obstructions. If the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher is clean, see below for the other “no water” causes.

Dishwasher – Troubleshoot “No Water”

  • Be sure the door is fully shut
  • Inspect to be sure water is turned on to dishwasher
  • Check dishwasher filter for clogs
  • Be sure float switch is not stuck in “up” position
  • Inspect water inlet valve for faults
  • Test for faulty door switch – thinks the door is open
  • Inspect drain pump – fault leads to no water fill
  • Control board failure – test or replace board

Dishwasher Filter Is Clogged?

Check the filter at the very bottom of the dishwasher. Locate the filter and “twist” it out. Clean the filter of any debris. Check the filter housing and clean this area too. You will most likely find pieces of food or possibly glass inside. Remove all foreign materials and reinstall clean filter. Test your dishwasher to be sure it lets in water.

A Stuck Dishwasher Float Switch?

A stuck float switch is a common NO WATER issue with dishwashers. This small float is the component that “measures” the water in the dishwasher. If it gets stuck in the wrong position, the dishwasher will not fill with water.

Open the dishwasher door and look in the bottom for the little round float that moves up and down with the water. If the float switch is stuck in the UP position then the dishwasher will believe that the dishwasher has water in it. When this occurs, the dishwasher will not fill with water. (It could be as simple as a fork or a piece of food that is holding the float in the up position)

Faulty Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve?

The water inlet valve is the component that lets water into the dishwasher. If this valve is somehow clogged or blocked, it will not release water into the dishwasher. It is controlled by a solenoid, so if the solenoid is faulty, or the wiring is bad, the water will not fill to the dishwasher. Inspect the water inlet valve both mechanically and electrically to be sure it is working properly.

Dishwasher Drain Pump Issue?

If the drain pump is not pumping the water out of the dishwasher from the previous wash, the dishwasher will not fill with water on the next wash. This is because water is still in the bottom of the dishwasher and the dishwasher will not fill with new water. The drain pump will need to be looked at to see if it is possibly clogged or and issue with no power going to the pump. Inspect the drain pump to see if this is the cause of no water in your dishwasher. Sometimes if you hear a hum, this tells you the drain pump is having issues.
